During the gray days of winter, conventional, smallbore and air gun shooters keep in shape for the outdoor season by shooting in gallery matches and leagues to participate in the highlight events of the winter—the NRA National Indoor Rifle, Pistol and Collegiate Championships.

Since 1952, local match directors have forwarded their results and top-scoring targets to NRA Headquarters to be combined into nationally ranked championships. NRA sanctions these local matches, provides numerous awards and certificates, and scores them. NRA sanctions local matches called sectionals in three categories—Open, Junior and Collegiate. Each category recognizes local winners in pistol and rifle disciplines in international, conventional, air gun and smallbore.
