As we all know, repeatedly inserting steel mounting screws into an aluminum threaded hole can quickly wear out the threads. Now we have a solution from our friends at Creedmoor Sports―the new Spotting Scope Mount Saver ($25, creedmoorsports.com).

This product is designed to resolve this problem that’s familiar to many competitors―the stripping or wearing out of the threaded holes in a spotting scope mount. These holes will eventually be useless after constant attaching and removing of a spotting scope from a tripod. The Mount Saver will help ensure that your scope mount and head remain in nearly-new condition. Although originally designed with spotting scopes in mind, the Mount Saver may prove useful for photographers, or anyone who uses equipment that attaches to tripods for that matter.

Measuring just 2.178 x 1.5 inches, and made from ⅜-inch thick 6061 black anodized aluminum, the new Mount Saver comes with a standard ¼-20 socket cap screw that recesses and mounts flush.

There are three screw holes available to choose from, as opposed to the single hole found on typical mounts. Depending on mount orientation, minor vertical or horizontal adjustments to the scope’s position can be made on the mount. Additionally, thanks to the extra holes, if scope owners ever mistakenly strips out one of the holes, there are still two more to choose from.

Brent Books of Creedmoor Sports said, “Some of the higher end scopes have a steel helicoil lining the hole. The problem with the helicoil is that they have very sharp leading edges that tend to cut into the steel mounting screw, ruining the threads over time.” He added, “The Scope Mount Saver is really a no-brainer when it comes to saving your equipment and time spent in repair. It’s effective and very economical when you consider the cost of scope repairs or replacements.”
