This October 3-6, trapshooters from across the nation will head to the NRA Whittington Center to participate in the first annual NRA Southwestern Trap Championships. With a 1,000-target program and a prize purse valued at over $20,000, this new special event will surely meet the high bar already set by existing regional championships.

Championship events conducted on Saturday and Sunday will have added money, to the tune of $15,000. Five championship events over the weekend of the tournament will distribute $3,000 each in prize money divided among the class and category winners, in addition to the overall champions and second place winners. (View the match program for the complete awards schedules.)

The 2019 NRA Southwestern Trap Championships will be held on the several Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) trap fields that are available at the Whittington Center—17 to be exact. These trap fields will be in use for both the match events and also available for shooters looking to get in some valuable practice time. With just over 33,000 acres, this facility is home to 19 shooting ranges, which includes the aforementioned 17 trap fields, 4 skeet fields, 3 sporting clays courses and two sets of 5-stand.

"The NRA Whittington Center is pleased to be the home of the 2019 NRA Southwestern Trapshooting Championships," said Whittington Center Chairman Ronald L. Schmeits. "We would like to thank all competitors that come to the facility and experience what the NRA Whittington Center has to offer."

As mentioned before, the program will feature 1,000 targets, which should prove appealing for trapshooters, whether they are on their way from the Fall Handicap in Missouri, or simply heading south to Arizona for the Autumn Grand. No matter the case, with over $20,000 in money, trophies and awards available, the first Southwestern Trap Championships will surely be well attended.

Amateur Trapshooting Association rules will govern the shoot and the scores tallied will be included in the official record. Classification will be in accordance with the ATA rules using six classes for singles and doubles. Additionally, 100- and 200-straight pins will be awarded by the NRA Whittington Center.

The main events at the match will include awards for junior shooters. In addition, there will be a sirloin steak dinner the evening of Saturday, October 5.

The NRA Whittington Center has 124 RV spots available, with reservations taken via phone at 575-445-3615. Visit the website at www.nrawc.org.
