This year’s NRA Smallbore Rifle National Championships were held July 25 to August 7. One of the three major championships that comprise the NRA National Matches, the 2022 NRA Smallbore Rifle Nationals were fired for the second year at Camp Atterbury, an Indiana National Guard facility located about 37 miles south of Indianapolis.

Smallbore rifle prone

The NRA Smallbore Prone National Championship is an aggregate of the Conventional Prone and Metric Prone National Championship grand aggregates.


Camp Atterbury covered smallbore & pistol range

Held on the covered rifle and pistol range at Camp Atterbury, the 2022 NRA Smallbore Conventional Prone National Championship was held July 31 to August 5, followed by the Metric Prone National Championship, which wrapped up on August 7.


Richard Clark

NRA First Vice President Willes K. Lee presents Richard Clark with a trophy plaque as emcee and NRA Board Member Patricia Clark looks on. Clark secured the 2022 NRA Smallbore 3-Position title with a score of 4676-273X. The NRA National Smallbore 3-Position Championship is determined from an aggregate of the Conventional 3-Position and Metric 3-Position Championships.


Covered range at Camp Atterbury

The covered range at Camp Atterbury was a big hit with Smallbore Rifle competitors, providing excellent protection from the weather.

Mark Del Cotto

A close match, Mark Del Cotto’s score of 6385-495X at the NRA Smallbore Rifle Conventional Prone Nationals was only one point ahead of the runner-up, Kevin Nevius (6384-498X). Del Cotto’s score also garnered him the High Civilian and High Intermediate Senior awards. Above, NRA Board Member Edie Fleeman presents Del Cotto the Critchfield Trophy plaque.


Kevin Nevius

Kevin Nevius of Gibsonburg, Ohio, was the NRA Smallbore Rifle Conventional Prone Championship runner-up with a score of 6384-498X. See him above at the awards ceremony receiving a medal from NRA Competitive Shooting Director Cole McCulloch.


British competitor on firing line

A British team traveled Camp Atterbury this year to compete in the Pershing International Trophy Match, a historic rifle contest with the United States dating back to 1931 that alternates locations between the two countries every four years. This year marked the first that the Pershing Match has been held at Camp Atterbury. (A 2022 Pershing Match photo gallery will be coming soon.)


Smallbore Prone NRA Iron Man Richard Clark

The 2022 NRA National Smallbore Rifle Championships at Camp Atterbury closed with the awarding of the Lones Wigger Iron Man Trophy to Richard Clark, who finished the match with a score of 13387-840X. Rainy weather welcomed competitors the morning of Thursday, August 4 at the NRA Smallbore Rifle Conventional Prone Nationals at Camp Atterbury.

Above are Smallbore F-Class Conventional Prone competitors on the firing line at Camp Atterbury. (Note the bipods and relatively higher powered optics.) The NRA Smallbore F-Class Championships include Conventional Prone and Metallic Prone matches.

This year’s NRA Smallbore Rifle F-Class Conventional Prone National Champion was James Murphy of Owensboro, Ky., who walked away from the match with a score of 6352-467X.

SBR Prone champ with Edie Fleeman

With a score of 8727-565X, Leonard Thomson of Banff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, won the 2022 NRA Smallbore Prone National Championship. Additionally, with a score of 2348-106X, Thomson secured the 2022 NRA Metric Prone title. See him pictured above at the awards ceremony with NRA Board Member Edie Fleeman.


Deena Wigger and Bruce Meredith

The High Woman award at the NRA Smallbore Conventional Prone Nationals, along with the High Military Veteran title, went to Deena Wigger of Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a score of 6379-459X. She is pictured above with Bruce Meredith. Many reading this will recognize her as the daughter of the late Lones Wigger, one of the greatest rifle shooters of all time.
